Winner August 2007: “Elvis”

Elvis’s story

Not quite “The King” but just as well loved by his owners, the Elvis in question is a little West Highland White Terrier who was brought into the surgery at the beginning of July because he was limping.

Vet Kate Everett examined him and was concerned because he had a very sore hock joint and was having trouble walking.. Not the best situation for a perky little dog like Elvis!
Investigations showed that Elvis had a condition which was eating away at the bone in his hock and so he was referred for an expert opinion to the VRCC Veterinary Hospital in Essex.

Elvis remained under treatment there and came back to see us for further x-rays in the middle of August. Unfortunately the x-rays showed that there was major deterioration and now Elvis’s hock joint looked much worse. A decision was made! Because of the risk that this could be an aggressive form of cancer, Elvis would have to have his leg amputated in order to save his life.

Elvis went into surgery and came out an hour and a half later and slightly lighter! It was then that one of the staff pointed out that this day was the anniversary of Elvis’s death, August 16th and how weird it was that we had our own little Elvis undergoing surgery!!

Following his amputation Elvis was in fine spirits. He tootled out for a walk and, provided we kept him facing the correct way against the fence, he managed to cock his (missing) leg. We were all thrilled to bits with his recovery.
The following day Elvis “ left the building” and returned home to his owners to continue his recovery. He was given plenty of pain relief and some antibiotics.

The best news of all came when the laboratory results came back and we discovered that there was no spread of cancer. There is absolutely no reason why this little hound dog shouldn't go on to lead a long and happy life!!

A well deserved Braveheart this month to Elvis, our little King!
