Winner March 2007 and runner up Braveheart of the Year 2007
Rocket’s story
When it came to the staff choosing our first month’s Braveheart pet, it was a unanimous decision.
Rocket is one of the most special patients we have ever treated here at Sandhole Veterinary Centre and one who stole every single member of staff’s heart.
She was first brought in last year by her worried owners collapsed and very pale. Vet Ian Johnson could see immediately that this was something serious, and after investigations with x-rays and ultrasound he discovered that Rocket had an enlarged spleen. The decision was taken to rush her into surgery where her spleen was successfully removed and a sample was sent to the laboratory.
Rocket recovered very well from her surgery, but when the lab results came back there was very bad news. Rocket had a very aggressive form of cancer, most unusual in a dog so young, everyone was devastated!
Rocket went for chemotherapy to a specialist, and all the staff there adored her as much as we did. She did very well at home for a few months, and with the tender loving care given to her by her owners she was comfortable and happy.
Sadly Rocket came back into us in March because she was going downhill, the treatment we tried wasn’t working and after much deliberation the sad decision was taken to put her to sleep.
The reason she has won this award, is that even though she went through major surgery, a horribly aggressive cancer, chemotherapy and intensive nursing both at home and in the hospital, Rocket’s spirit never waivered. She remained happy with a wagging tail throughout everything and never once growled, whined or complained all throughout her illness. She was a real softie, the kind of dog that you would be proud to have on the end of your lead! And we all loved treating her.
She was incredibly special and I know that she will never be forgotten by any of the staff here, so we are proud that she is our first practice “Braveheart” If anyone deserves this, it’s Rocket!
